Do you love talking? Do you love your local community? Would you like to help teenagers and adults in your community who struggle with the basics of reading and writing?

Approximately 1 in 10 New Zealanders struggle to read and write. Living with low literacy impacts so many aspects of life including health, finances, employment opportunities, well-being and self-esteem. This work changes lives and makes a real difference.

The Rural Youth & Adult Literacy Trust is looking for passionate, caring people who are great communicators to help promote our free reading and writing lessons within your local community.

We are looking for local ambassadors to represent us in your community - to help spread the word about our free services by helping us build and maintain relationships with local organisations and people.

Attend local community network meetings/events/talks/community initiatives

Help to maintain relationships with local Media, both social and newspapers/newsletters.

This is a very flexible role; you can do it whenever suits your schedule! No fixed hours!

You will need to let our Community Coordinator know what you have been doing at least once a month, but you can ask for her help at any time. RYALT will provide training and plenty of support.

You will also be part of a community of Regional Ambassadors who will share their experiences and give each other support through a closed Facebook Group and a couple of face-to-face meetings per year.

Requirements:

Outgoing, enjoy talking with people and be a great communicator, knowledge of (or be willing to learn about) literacy issues, understanding and empathy for those who are preliterate and how literacy can change lives. Able to take the initiative, self-manage and be an ideas person. Passionate about your local community and local people.
