We are seeking to appoint a Team Leader to our Roads Department.
This is a full-time, fixed term position through to the end of the season.
The main purpose of this role is to support the Head of Department to coordinate all aspects of operations across the department. A key requirement of this role is also to be available each morning to assist with any relief driving or road opening requirements.
In the absence of the HOD, the Roads Team Leader will have full responsibility for departmental operations so having a comprehensive understanding of all department processes, policies, and standards will be key.
We are seeking someone who has the confidence to set standards and help to create a high performing culture across the department. As we strive for continual improvement, our Team Leader will be expected to read the manuals, ask questions and be proactive in building knowledge through the documentation supplied.
They will train and impart their knowledge to staff, recognise training needs and identify training pathways for the team. Our ideal candidate will embrace the leadership culture, look at our company holistically and make suggestions that will have a positive impact across our operations.
About the role
Loading the grit truck using the Merlo
Spreading grit on the access road before business hours of operation or when grit is necessary for increased traction on the access road. Safely negotiating 2 way traffic during grit spreading
Anticipating weather and the affect it will have on the road/ staffing and resource requirements.
Operate MAN snow plow to clear snow off access road. Work towards operation of Land cruiser snow plow and Mercedes snow plow
Assist on site diesel mechanics when required
Display safe driving practices and abide by specific grit truck and snow plow sign-off induction learnings at all times
Abide by specific merlo sign-off induction learnings at all times
Understand the hazards involved with operating heavy machinery and how to minimise risk
Effective communication with Carparks TL & crew to establish where grit may be required
Recover immobilised vehicles after loss of traction
Display safe driving practices and abide by specific vehicle recovery sign-off induction learnings at all times
Display safe driving practices and abide by specific light vehicle sign-off induction learnings at all times
Ensuring vehicle start-up checks are performed
Ensuring vehicles are kept clean and tidy
Reports any vehicle faults or damage to supervisor for immediate attention
Ensures essential roads operational items are kept in good, working order and are there for the next day i.e. chains, signage and towing equipment.
Using harrows to break up ice and bring grit up to the surface of the road to improve traction.
Understanding which road conditions require the use of harrows and/or brushes
Fastening harrows/ brushes to the vehicle and removing them in the correct place upon finish.
Operating harrows/ brushes safely within sign off parameters
Assisting with chain fitting, car parking, drop zone management or traffic management
Support Carparks TL when required
Set up chain bays accurately to the legal TMP
Follow Waka Kotahi requirements for working on a roading worksite
Follow chain fitting guidelines to safely and efficiently demonstrate chain fitting to guests.
Manage staff for breaks and well being
Set up the Drop Zone to effectively use the space
Safely and efficiently manage traffic and pedestrians
Communicate with HOD, Grit truck drivers, roads TL any conditions issues with the drop zone (icy) that may require grit, harrows etc
Understand and interpret the conditions on the ground. Shut the drop zone down to the public if required. Inform HOD, crew, SAM/ ASAM and admin
Assist HOD with “handy man” jobs around the base building
Direct contractors on site to Admin for H&S sign in and then to work site around building if instructed by HOD
Contact contractors from contacts list when HOD is on days off to get issues fixed within the buildings
Looks for opportunities to grow revenue and more importantly in this position - reducing costs.
Staff Training
Keep crew informed and engaged in workplace health and safety
Regular checking in with seniors and general crew
About you
Minimum 1 year in a leadership position,
Class two licence endorsement is required
“W” endorsements is required
Exceptional driving skills is preferred.
Basic computer skills
Capable of working outdoors in all weather conditions Previous experience in managing people in a Health & Safety focused Workplace, ability to work outdoors in all weather.
Experience working in the ski industry would be ideal.
A mechanical aptitude with basic knowledge of vehicle maintenance experience driving on snow and ice would be ideal
Forks licence would be an asset
STMS Qualification would be an asset
