Major Incident Support Team Member - Volunteer - Invercargill

Invercargill City, Southland, New Zealand

Are you looking for a way to volunteer with Hato Hone St John, but frontline ambulance work isn't for you?

Here's an opportunity that allows you to provide support to our Ambulance Officers and your community at the same time!

The Major Incident Support Team has the important task of ensuring that Hato Hone St John is providing a world leading response to major incidents and large events.

The Major Incident Support Team (MIST) is looking for non-clinical people throughout New Zealand to deploy and assist the Ambulance Operations and Event Health Services teams - from Northland to Southland/Otago. As a MIST member, your role will be to provide support at planned and unplanned events in times of crisis and high workload. This can include major sporting events, festivals, and concerts through to incidents and natural disasters.

Ideally you must live in Invercargill (or within a short driving distance of) to be considered for this role. We will not be able to consider those outside of Invercargill due to the potential emergency response nature of this role.

There are 4 major areas where you can be involved (but may not be required at each event):

Administration  - Tracking patients, staff and vehicles - making sure all the paperwork is done.

Communications  - Specialist communications within a Command Unit at an incident and between the incident and an Emergency Operations Centre or Ambulance Communications Centre.

Welfare  - Looking after Staff that are working - keeping them fed, watered and mentally well.

Logistics  - Moving and setting up infrastructure. This can also include moving vehicles, driving between sites, setting up tents

Some of your key tasks may include (but are not limited) to the following:

Ensuring all operations vehicles and equipment and Major Incident equipment are maintained to a state of operational readiness

Responding to major incident and filling the CIMS 'Logistics' & 'Welfare' roles

Establishing the Scene Command Point and any ICP / EOC Duties

Provide communications and logistical support at significant events.

Our ideal candidates have:

A current, clean full NZ Driver's Licence class 1 required, with the ability to drive both automatic and manual vehicles confidently. However, if you do not hold a license, don't let that hold you back from applying - we can still use your help!

A First Aid certificate

An ability to work as part of a team as well as independently

A strong communication skills and high level of attention to detail

Are flexible, resilient and fun and able to maintain performance under pressure

Are physically fit

Demonstrate behaviours that align with Hato Hone St John's core values  - Do the right thing (Mahi Tika), Side by Side (Tū Tahi), Straight Up (Mahi Pono), Make it better (Whakapai Ake), Open Minds (Whakaaro Nui)

These are not clinical roles, but important support roles, so an ATP (Authority to Practice) is not required.

Support you can expect after joining our team

We will give you all the support and education needed to make you safe and effective in the field. This includes:

A two day  Operations Induction  course.

A two day  Operations Risk Management  course which is designed to help you stay safe in the field.

A two day  Ambulance Driving  course (where driving is part of your role) which is supported by online learning and the completion of a driving logbook.

Please note: all appointments are subject to satisfactory completion of pre-employment checks including, but not limited to physical assessment and health check. This does apply to current members as well. For clinical operations roles where you are required to drive, you will be required to meet Hato Hone St John medical standards. To learn more about these, please follow this link https://join.stjohn.org.nz/sitefiles/files/HSW5.20-Medical-Standards.pdf .

We welcome and encourage diversity in our workforce and adhere to best practice equal employment opportunity principles as well as commitment to delivering equitable outcomes in all aspects of our recruitment and our ways of working.

Come and join our friendly and professional team! We have a range of exciting volunteer and career opportunities across New Zealand.
